Reworld™ Huntington Sponsors and Volunteers for Rotary Environmental Action Coalition of Huntington
July 15, 2025

Did you know that a single adult oyster can filter up to 50 gallons of water each day? This incredible natural ability plays a vital role in improving water quality and supporting healthier marine ecosystems.
Reworld™ Huntington rolled up their sleeves for an inspiring volunteer day with our friends at REACH — the Rotary Environmental Action Coalition of Huntington. We spent the day on the nursery docks at Gold Star Battalion Beach in Huntington, gaining hands-on experience and a deeper understanding of how sustainable aquaculture is making a difference in Long Island’s coastal waters.
As a proud major sponsor of REACH, we’re thrilled to support their mission not only through funding, but by actively participating in the impactful work they lead. One of our key tasks was scrubbing sea squirts off the oyster cages — a crucial part of regular maintenance. These invasive organisms compete with oysters for space and can restrict water flow, so keeping cages clean is essential to promoting healthy oyster growth and thriving marine habitats.
REACH is a collaborative partnership between the Town of Huntington, Cornell Cooperative Extension, and local Rotary Clubs, working together to protect and restore our marine environment through year-round initiatives such as: Spat-on-shell oyster cultivation, Sugar kelp farming which absorbs excess nitrogen and helps balance local nutrients and Shell recycling, where used clam and oyster shells are collected, cured locally, and reused as substrate for new oyster growth.
We’re honored to be part of this initiative and excited to continue supporting REACH’s mission.
Here’s to clean water, resilient ecosystems, and a sustainable future!
