Durham York
Reducing Landfill Waste
Located in Courtice, Ontario, the Durham York Energy Centre is one of the newest thermomechanical treatment facilities in North America. The Facility is owned by the regional municipalities of Durham and York and serves residents with reliable and sustainable waste management. Every year, our facility processes more than 150,000 tons of waste that would otherwise have ended up in landfills.
As the facility operator, not only do we keep waste out of landfills, we are committed to maximizing safety and minimizing environmental impacts.
Our Facility’s Annual Impact
Less waste in landfills reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 266,000 tons of CO2. That's like taking 59,000 passenger vehicles off the road for one year.
We produce 17 megawatts of electricity 24/7 with our Waste-to-Energy process - enough to power 9,000 homes for a year.
We also recover 4,900 tons of metal for recycling annually - enough to build 3,000 cars and produce 37 million aluminum cans.
Environmental Performance
We care about our communities and operate well below emissions limits. Over 99.9 percent of what comes out of our plant's stack is what you'd typically find in air - water vapor, nitrogen, oxygen, and carbon dioxide.
