Reducing Landfill Waste
Located in Palm Beach, Florida, the Palm Beach Renewable Energy Facility No. 1 (REF 1)(opens in a new tab) is an award winning thermomechanical treatment facility. The Facility, owned by the Solid Waste Authority (SWA) of Palm Beach County, serves residents with reliable and sustainable waste management.
The Solid Waste Authority of Palm Beach County Renewable Energy Park consists of two two thermomechanical treatment facilities, which process over 1.8 million tons of waste that would otherwise go to a landfill. For information on the Palm Beach Renewable Energy Facility No. 2, visit this link.
As the facility operator, we are proud to keep waste out of landfills and are committed to ensuring safe operations and minimizing environmental impacts.
Our Facility’s Annual Impact
Less waste in landfills reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 3,700,000 metric tons of CO2. That's like taking 832,000 passenger vehicles off the road for one year (combined impact of both Palm Beach facilities).
We produce 158 megawatts of electricity 24/7 with our Waste-to-Energy process - enough to power 81,000 homes for a year (combined impact of both Palm Beach facilities).
We also recover 56,600 tons of metal for recycling annually - enough to build 42,000 cars and produce 454 million aluminum cans (combined impact of both Palm Beach facilities).
Environmental Performance
We care about our communities and operate well below emissions limits. Over 99.9 percent of what comes out of our plant's stack is what you'd typically find in air - water vapor, nitrogen, oxygen, and carbon dioxide. The remaining constituents are well below federal and state standards.
